MYRTLE BEACH S.C – It surely wasn’t pretty, but Colby “The Kid” Howard, 15, overcame two on-track incidents to finish sixth on Saturday at Myrtle Beach Speedway in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
For Howard, a third generation racer in his first season of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model racing, it was a frustrating result to what could have been his first win in full late model trim.
“I know we had either a first or second place car,” Howard said. “But other drivers took away our shot. We were fast all day and started the feature just riding and trying to save tires. I got hit on lap 11 when one driver tried to be a hero and go three wide with 90 laps left in the race and that caused us to wreck. Fortunately we had just some door damage.”
“Then as we were contesting our position under yellow waiting for the officials to sort it out for us another driver had brain fade, turned right into me and hit me in the left front, which hydrolocked our shock and knocked our toe out in the front end. We restarted about 12th and everyone realized a storm was coming so the race may only go to halfway. We all started racing hard. I got to fourth but eventually the shock started becoming an issue because it had no travel and it was grinding on all the metal. With the left front pinned down and the right front being free, the car started getting loose and I fell to sixth. That’s where we were when the rain came at lap 90 and they called it. It’s frustrating for me because this team and our supporters deserve better. We’ll try again at Anderson on Friday.”
Colby and the team will have “The Oderless” No. 16 in action at Anderson Motor Speedway in Anderson, South Carolina this Friday, July 14th. Race time is 8pm.
