SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. – For third-generation NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model racer Colby “The Kid” Howard, this season had its ups and downs. When the final checkered flag flew on the series points season, however, the popular 15-year-old racer sat atop the South Carolina state Rookie Of The Year standings and finished second in overall state points behind NASCAR national champion Lee Pulliam.
For Howard, whose Grandfather Buddy and his father Rodney achieved great success running on the short tracks of South Carolina, winning rookie of the year and finishing second in state points behind a national champion is a satisfying way to cap off the points season.
“Finishing second behind Lee is huge,” he said of his achievement. “He has won four national championships and he’s one of the best. Winning anything like rookie of the year that is NASCAR related is so hard, because there are so many really good drivers you have to race against every week to get every spot you can. We struggled a lot early in the year with setups and just figuring out what it takes to win in a late model, but we got better and better and we finished strong. I can’t thank my team and our sponsors enough. I am thankful to be able to race and follow in the footsteps of my Dad and Grandpa. It feels good to be able to say we got rookie of the year. It’s an honor to be alongside all the other winners from the other states across the country. Thank you to all of our fans for their support as well. They share in all of our accomplishments.”
