ANDERSON/MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Colby “The Kid” Howard, 15, of Simpsonville, South Carolina has been trying all season to reach victory lane following his step up from limited late models to the elevated competition of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model division.
Friday night at Anderson Speedway in Anderson, South Carolina, the first track in which he competed in a four wheel race car, he finally achieved that goal when he won the first of two features on the evening with his blue No. 16 family owned racer.
In the second race, the inverted start put him mid-pack and he battled hard all race long to a seventh place finish.
The soft-spoken youngster was both thrilled and relieved to get that first victory of the season.
“I don’t really know what to say,” Howard said. “It’s been a really challenging year for us and a learning year for me. I’m happy we finally won a race for everyone that helps and supports us and me. I can’t thank my family, my team, The Odorless, Century Concrete, Southern Utilities, Eubanks Oil and our fans enough for their support. The second race was tough but we got through it. The car was better than that result, but it was a lot of hard racing there. I’m just thankful for the win.”
At Myrtle Beach, he qualified in the top five and ran in the top six the entire race, which went 75 laps with only one yellow. He eventually ended up fifth.
“The car was tight in the center and loose off for the last good bit of the race,” Howard said. “I tried about everything I knew to do to make it better but it just didn’t work out for us tonight. These drivers are tough and if you’re off a little here, it makes a huge difference. We ran with them, but nobody except Lee (Pulliam) was really doing a lot of passing. It was a good run but not what we were hoping for after leading and finishing second the last time out here.”
